How to Choose a 12v LED Strip
How to Choose a 12v LED Strip
A 12v led strip is an inexpensive and easy way to add lots of glow and color to a project. They can be used to make cool patterns or even react to sensors and switches. There are a few different kinds of strips, each with their own benefits and drawbacks.
The first thing to consider is what kind of power supply you want to use. A 24V strip is more efficient than a 12V strip because it uses less current. This minimizes resistance-related voltage drop over longer runs. It also runs cooler, so it lasts longer. However, the downside is that you need to buy a larger power supply than if you were using a 12V strip.
Another consideration is whether you want a digital or analog strip. Analog strips can be mono (one color) or RGB (full spectrum). They are usually sold on reels that can be cut into small segments, sometimes with a scissors icon screen printed right on them! They are controlled with potentiometers or buttons. If you choose a 12V analog strip, you can hook it up to an Intel Edison with Arduino breakout board. This will allow you to control it via the Arduino IDE.
A common problem with many LED lights is flickering, which can be very annoying and cause eye strain. 12v led strips are generally not prone to this because of their lower voltage and better filtering in the driver circuitry. This makes them a good choice for applications where stability is important, like in vehicles and commercial buildings.
Some people prefer the look of 12v led strips over 220V strip lights because they are more compact. They also tend to have a more uniform color and brightness, which is ideal for projects that require a consistent appearance. Lastly, the low voltage makes them compatible with many existing automotive or home lighting systems.
If you are building a large project that requires multiple LED strips, it is best to go with a 24V system to minimize resistance-related voltage drop. This will help you maintain an even light output over a long run and ensure that your system is rated to handle the total wattage of all the LEDs.
You should also keep in mind that the operating voltage of a strip can vary between manufacturers and models, so you should always check the datasheet before buying one. Also, current draw can fluctuate when a pattern is being run, so you should test the strip with a multimeter to get an accurate reading.
Addressable strip lights are very useful because they can be controlled by a microcontroller. These chips allow you to set the individual LEDs to different colors and brightnesses. They are commonly available in WS2815, TM1812, GS8208, and LPD6803. This article will focus on how to use the WS2815 chip to create an individually addressable LED strip. The other chips will be covered in future articles. This will give you the knowledge and skills to create your own addressable led strip lights!
