How to Use LED Strip Lights to Create a Unique Lighting Solution
LED strip lights can be used in many ways to create a unique lighting solution. They can be placed inside a home to add accents and set the mood or outside to add lighting to landscape features or decks. They are very flexible and can be cut to length or connected end-to-end with solderless connectors or clips. They consume less power than traditional incandescent bulbs and come with a variety of controls to control the colors, fade, or blink effects. They are also more resistant to damage than conventional bulbs.
How bright do LED strip lights get?
The brightness of LED strip lights, measured in lumens per foot (lm/ft), depends on two factors: the chip density and the power draw. A higher chip density strip will appear brighter than a lower-density strip drawing the same amount of power.
Many of today's LED strip lights are color adjustable by changing the voltage on each segment. Some even offer millions of possible shades of colour. These types of strips typically have five wires (+, -R, -G, -B, -W) for connection. Some models have a single driver chips that drive all segments as one, while others have individual drivers for each segment.
Most LED strip lights operate on 12V or 24V DC and can be powered with a standard power supply. A PCB, which is a thin, flexible circuit board, distributes the electricity across the LEDs using copper traces. The resistance in the PCB helps regulate the voltage and protect the strip from overheating or overloading. The PCB can also be pre-applied with adhesive backing for easy installation onto surfaces.
Choosing the correct power supply is important because too low of a wattage will result in excessive voltage drop and short circuits. You should choose a power supply rated for the total wattage of the strip lights you are connecting and make sure it has sufficient wattage to handle the maximum length of your installation.
Many LED strip lights have an adhesive backing that allows them to be easily installed on a surface. Some strips also have mounting clips for added security or to connect multiple strips together. If you are connecting your strips with soldering, be sure to use proper safety precautions to avoid burns. Choosing the right surface to adhere the strip to is another consideration, as some materials can cause it to become hot and lose its adhesion. The best surface to adhere the strip to is a metal, as it will allow it to release excess heat. Other materials to consider are plastic, glass, or wood, but you should test the adhesive before applying it. Lastly, you will need to take into account any weather conditions where the strip will be installed. If it will be exposed to rain or snow, you may need to apply a waterproof sealant to the strip.
